This is an unused song from the last recording session of Suicidal Cop. The band did not want to use the song because it was two simple and straight ahead they felt. I however was always really proud of the song lyrically and felt that it was one our strongest in terms of content. I feel it’s one of my favorite SC songs in terms of content. I really wanted to discuss the subject of dealing with the feelings after a friend or friends commit suicide, in particular in the context of living in a small town. The intense feelings of guilt, anger, shame, regret, and loss compounded by the lack of support and understanding from the community or family. Lethbridge is a community that has seen more then it’s fair share of teen and young adult suicide. I was always struck but the imposing figure of the bridge, standing silhouetted against the sky like golgotha. A beacon of self imposed execution, a never ceasing reminder. More recently our Sarah Plumer of Lethbridge took her own life, it is a poignant reminder of how fragile life is. I wanted to post this song, despite the band being done- because the subject of survivors guilt is rarely touched on in punk, but it is an over whelming feeling. Like being empty, and yet your guts weigh you to the ground. Take care of your friends, life is a fleeting thing.
“Deathbridge”
By Suicidal Cop
lived a life in many ways the same
so why are they gone and you remain
in a field in waist high grass
staring at it, reliving the past
all those years of being told what to do
cant tell me they have not effect on you
maybe in the end, you should have walked the plank with all your friends
maybe that would be easier on you
guilt feels real so you hold it close
walk the streets followed by ghosts
they say they understand, but it’s something they don’t like talking about
so you stay silent and inside you rot
always sympathize with what you’ve gone through
but their words never meant shit to you
maybe in the end, you should have walked the plank with all your friends
maybe that would be easier on you
so tell me you don’t feel the same
bridge out there calling your name
augmented skyline, blocks the light of day
casts a shadow that has a name
step out of the streets at alone
at night families sleeping in homes
tired of the guilt and shame and living in fear
screaming it loud see if anyone can hear
